Movie:
After one of the worst storms in history, the people of a little town suddenly see a strange mist appear in between the mountains. At first they don't pay too much attention to it but when a man enters the local supermarket shouting that there's something in the mist, the atmosphere suddenly changes.

The doors get closed and seconds later the entire supermarket is surrounded by mist. When David Drayon goes to the back of the building to check on the generator with a couple of others, they open the loading dock door to suddenly see tentacles of some sort enter and kill a young boy.

They manage to close the port again but when they get back in the store, not everyone believes them.

Quickly the store gets divided into seperate groups: those that don't believe something supernatural is going on, the group with David who think they should find a better shelter and look for rescue, and those following Mrs. Carmody who believe God's wrath is upon them and the Apocalypse is here...
 
Sound and Vision:
The image quality of this blu-ray disc is good with plenty of detail and no compression errors that spoil the fun.

The sound is vivid and the DTS track does a very nice job in keeping the atmosphere tense.

Conclusion:
The Mist is the latest movie based on a story by Stephen King and director in charge is Frank Darabont who's already worked with King on The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

Just like with those two movies, you don't have to expect a splatterfest but rather a movie that works on atmosphere and psychology. How the people in the store are transformed from normal rational thinking human beings into fanatics that would do anything to get salvation is the main thing to follow. The monsters outside are only a setting and although there are some cool scenes where they get into action, it's the psychology that's important.

As such the movie tends to be a bit boring at times, especially since there are regular moments where we go forward in time. However, towards the end there's a finale that does make up for quite a lot.

Movies based on Stephen King stories vary a lot in quality with some low budget horror fests and on the other hand more psychological films like The Shawshank Redemption. The Mist is more like the second type but doesn't really manage to rise to the quality of f.i. The Green Mile. Still, it's a nice movie and lovers of the genre won't be disappointed. And you can be sure it's not crap like Desperation or Children of the Corn.
