Gamers fed up, sue EA

Posted on Thursday, 12 June 2008 by Speed, source: Gamespot
A couple of US gamers have decided they're fed up with EA making exclusivity deals and have filed suit against the company.

The gamers have found that EA's exclusivity deals with the National Football League, the Arena Football League, and NCAA Football are making it impossible for competitors to make decent American Football games and create a monopoly that allows the company to raise prices of such games.

With no Take-Two competitor the following year, the suit notes that Electronic Arts raised the price of Madden 2006 back to $49.95, an increase of nearly 70 percent. The suit also brings up Electronic Arts' attempted acquisition of Take-Two, saying that it "would remove one of the few companies with the ability and expertise to compete in the market for interactive football software" if EA somehow lost its exclusive deals.
...
The plaintiffs are asking for restitution and damages for those who purchased an Electronic Arts football game since August of 2005, disgorgement of all profits made as a result of anticompetitive actions, and that the infringing agreements be declared null and void
EA has decided to not comment on the matter and the plaintiffs haven't responded to enquiries yet.

So what do you think? An easy way to earn a buck, or a waste of time & money?

They're not really making money here. Money goes back to all people that bought their games. Personally I am in favor of this lawsuit. Although I probably can't claim because I don't have receipts I think EA has gained a football monopoly and raising prices because of it is unfair.

If there was other competition maybe the games would be a bit better made.

Sounds very familiar. I agree with these gamers as EA does it in more games: they did the same with FIFA contra PES.
I find that not very good for a good competition as they more or less monopolize the market this way. They should be sued. Just like the European Union did against Microsoft.

While I do agree with the lawsuit to some extent I dont think sueing them will actually change anything.

The lawsuit should be against the NFL for forcing an exclusive licensing deal. This lawsuit is like saying ABC should be sued because they are the only network showing football on Monday nights. EA wasn't even the highest bidder in that deal.
