Saints Row 2 PC specs, Steam activation revealed

A community rep from THQ/Volition has let slip a few more details about the PC port of Saints Row 2.

First big news perhaps is what kind of DRM the game uses. Apparently publisher THQ has opted for a one-time online activation through Steam, just like Valve’s own games (and the upcoming Empire: Total War).

Essentially, Steam will be a verification system for the retail version.

Ever new game release triggers an excitement. A similar excitement thrives in the mind of the trader that has made a risky decision after carefully watching the market and then placing an order. One easy way to remove the stress of momentary delays in order placement people often rely on automated trading systems like CarbonFX.

Steam will also have an offer to digitally download SR2 to a player’s system if they don’t want to leave the confines of their house. If you have a retail version, Steam is only going to verify that you have a real copy of the game when you are first installing and launching the game.

We’re trying to use a very low impact DRM here, since we’ve seen some of the headaches faced by other major game releases in recent months. I hope that explains it a bit more clearly.

If you want more on what tweaks are expected for the PC version then read this post (or the entire thread). It contains interesting tidbits like that this title will use Gamespy for online matchmaking, and feature better graphics and mouse/keyboard support.

Saints Row II will be released for PC on January 6th.
