This version of Alone in the dark is being developped by Eden Studios. They claim that since the beginning few things have changed in horror games and they want to do something about that. They're planning to push the genre in a new direction. To do this they have concentrated on gameplay and less on pixels/polygones. In spite of this we can say that the game looks great. We got to see a trailer and when it suddenly stopped someone took over the game on Xbox 360.

The story takes place in the present, but in spite of this Edward Carnby still is the main character. In the previous parts Edward was always there, but then the game took place in 1920 and now he's as old as he was in those games. The scene this time is Central Park in New York and everything is recogniseable. There is something supernatural, and it's your job to fing out what. It remains vague how Edward suddenly got in the present, but for the story and the tension that doesn't matter. Central Park has been chosen because it's a city in a city. You can find there a mix of cultures, the place even has its own police district.

Interaction with your environment becomes very important. During the presentation we got to see a scene in which Edward drove a taxi and ended up at a car park where a truck with a car on it stood. The loading bridge where the car was on could be turned over, and after that the locks could be shot. Consequently the car rolled off the truck and you could put the taxi on it. But that's not everything ! If you're in a car, you can operate everything : heating, radio, locks of the doors,...

Determining the right camera angle in a game isn't always easy, and certainly not in a horror game because some angles are good for the atmosphere, but bad for aiming a gun. Eden Studios tried to solve this : regularly the angle changes to best suit the atmosphere and the tension.

The graphics of Alone in the dark 5 are marvellous and the story should be strong too. A while ago you could read that the game will be split up in epsiodes which will have a length of 30 to 40 minutes and will end with a cliffhanger. That way you'll want to know how the story continues as quickly as possible. The game will probably be released Q4 2006 on PC, Xbox360 and PS3. We were told that there will also be a version for Wii, but this hasn't been confirmed officially yet.
